Why update leaders?
Basic Workshop Leaders should be updated every three-five years, or when the workshop materials have had significant revision. The updates sharpens skills and helps ensure the integrity of the basic workshops.
In 2022, the English as a Second Language and Tutoring Children and Youth manuals and guidelines were significantly revised, primarily in the teaching of vocabulary drills for teaching English.

In 2022, the English as a Second Language and Tutoring Children and Youth manuals and guidelines were significantly revised, primarily in the teaching of vocabulary drills for teaching English.
This leader update:
- teaches certified basic workshop leaders the changes in the manuals and guidelines
- verifies the leader is conducting drills and other demonstrations correctly
- gives the workshop leader time to interact with an experienced leader and other participants.
Basic Information:
- Each training track will be conducted online with a weekly video conference component. The online component requires participants to read and respond to information and to submit assignments. During the video conference, participants will demonstrate skills and have the ability to ask additional questions or seek clarification on topics studied.
- Registration opens August 8 and closes August 29.
- Cost: $85 and includes guidelines and handouts. Invoices will be sent to state conventions when the deadline passes.
- Participants are responsible for purchasing the current manual for their training track and additional materials such as Lauchbach Way to Reading for the Adult Reading and Writing update.
- Mandatory weekly video meetings will be held September 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29, unless a different time is agreed upon by leader and participants. Plan on 60-90 minutes, depending upon the week's topics. Meetings will begin at 7:00 Eastern, 6:00 Central, 5:00 Mountain, and 4:00 Pacific or at a pre-agreed upon time between participants and leaders.
